Pastor, First Baptist Church, Murray, Ky.
My personal commitment and my church’s commitment to doing more for Christ this year go together. I have challenged everyone in my church (myself included) to reach out to at least one person they know who does not know Jesus or who is disconnected from the church. We built a giant wall in our foyer for people to write the names of those to whom they are reaching out. This “radical wall” (our theme for 2011 is “radical urgency”) serves as a visible reminder of our mission in 2011. There are hundreds of names on the wall, and we are already seeing fruit. I know of at least two that accepted Christ because of the focus. Due to the increased evangelism in our church, we are on pace to double our baptisms this year, of which all are due to conversion growth thus far.
Additionally, we currently have a large budget surplus year-to-date (about $450,000). We plan on giving most of this surplus away to our mission partners, the KBC included. This missions giving will be in addition to the 10% of our budget that we give to the CP, and it’s also in addition to the $110,000 that we are raising strictly for missions (such as Eilza Broadus, Lottie, and Annie). Our total missions giving this year should top $500,000.
New missions endeavors for 2011 include adopting an unreached people group beyond the perimeter of other missions organizations, helping plant two churches in Boston and Chicago, hosting a city-wide local missions project, and sending numerous people on at least 10 short-term missions trips all over the world.
